What is a Digital Product Passport (DPP)?

A Digital Product Passport is a digital product identity that stores all relevant information about a product throughout its entire lifecycle. Via QR code, manufacturers, distributors and end customers can access data such as composition, origin, compliance documents and recycling information.

When does the Digital Product Passport become mandatory?

So far only the battery passport from February 2027 has been adopted (EU 2023/1542). The ESPR (EU 2024/1781) provides the framework under which further product groups follow; for textiles and for chemical products, the delegated acts setting binding dates are still pending.

What data does a DPP for chemical products contain?

A DPP for chemical products contains: product identification (CAS, EINECS), batch/LOT number, safety data sheet, GHS classification, REACH status, manufacturer information, analysis certificates and recycling/disposal instructions.

EU Regulation: The DPP Becomes Mandatory

2024

ESPR Adopted

EU Regulation 2024/1781 (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) comes into force.

2027

Batteries

First and so far only adopted DPP obligation — it follows from the Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, not from the ESPR. Industrial and EV batteries need a digital passport from February 2027.
